As Nigerians continue to wait endlessly for the draft Data Protection Bill, the Incorporated Trustees of Digital Rights Lawyers Initiative (DRLI) has, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act 2011, sent a letter dated June 16, 2021 to the National Identity Management Commission NIMC) requesting the Commission to furnish answers the following questions:
a. Whether the Data Protection Bill 2020 has been presented before the National Assembly?;
b. If No, what is the current position of the Bill?
It will be recalled that in September 2020, NIMC called for public comments on the draft bill but nothing has been heard on the bill even after the validation workshop where stakeholders’ comments and views were expressed.
DRLI has however given NIMC, 7 days to respond to their request, otherwise the will approach the court for an order of mandamus compelling them to furnish the information.
