Two female lawyers who were earlier arrested on Tuesday by the police were arraigned at the Ojo Magistrates” Court, Lagos on Wednesday, March 17 for fighting inside the court premises.
The defendants, Adaobi Emeka (pregnant) aged 37 years, and Nkiru Nwanyanwu, aged 40, years were charged on one count of affray by engaging in physical combat in the court’s premises.
They pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The Prosecutor, Simon Uche told the court that the defendants committed the offence on March 16 in the court premises.
He said that his attention was drawn to the scene by a shouting crowd outside the court room, who informed the court that the two female lawyers were fighting.
He said that they were immediately arrested and taken to the Ojo Police station where they were detained .
According to the prosecutor, the lawyers were subsequently, allowed to go home on self recognizance with an order to re-appear at the station the next day
The lawyers were consequently arraigned before the Magistrate, Mr A.A Adesanya and after their respective pleas, were granted bail in the sum of N100,000 each with sureties in like sum.
The court ordered that the sureties must be blood relations or clergy men .
The court added that the defendants must produce a letter of good behaviour from their respective NBA branches.
Adaobi who is pregnant was said to have engaged in the fracas with Nkiru her colleague, after both lawyers struggled to offer their complimentary cards to suspects who were just produced before the court on Tuesday March 16.
The pregnant lawyer, Adaobi, was reported to have first offered her card to the suspects but was opposed by Nkiru who immediately threw her card on the floor. In reaction, Adaobi also grabbed Nkiru’s complimentary card and this time, flung it outside the Court’s window
During their arraignment, the suspects were produced from detention to narrate the incident.
They explained to the court that the lawyers had both offered them their complimentary cards, but became antagonistic towards one another as a result.
The offences contravenes the provisions of sections 54 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015
The court adjourned the case to May 18 for mention
At the time of filing this reports relatives of the defendants who are still in police custody were still making efforts to perfect the bail conditions of the defendants.
