Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said that he will not interfere with the independent of the judiciary.
Governor Ortom who made the promise over the weekend at the commencement of activities marking Benue state judiciary 2019/2020 Legal year celebration held at Benue Hotels in Makurdi.
Represented by his deputy Engr Benson Abounu, Ortom stated that his administration will not interfere in any matter before the court as he believes in the rule of law .
He said for the people to have confidence in the judiciary it must be separated from politics and caution against putting the judiciary on trial .
The governor who declared the legal year celebration open, commended the Chief Judge of Benue State Hon. Justice Aondover Kaka’an for the changes he has brougt into the judiciary within his short time in office and described Benue judiciary as outstanding and the busiest .
In his remarks, the Chief Judge of Benue state Hon. Justice Aondoaver Kaka’an described as “ strange “ to hear about chicanery often committed by lawyers against their clients .
The chief Judge noted that such sharp practices have not only eroded confidence in the law profession , but have created suspicion and bad blood between lawyers , their clients and the general public.
He also described as timely the theme of the Benue Legal year : Professional Ethics , and Administration of Justice In The Digital Era”. saying the rate at which lawyers carelessly filed cases in court , dress carelessly ,relate with their senior professional colleagues is becoming alarming
“We hope that the robust discussion of this issue in this legal year celebration will bring some improvement “ said Justice Kaka’an.
Chairman Central Planning Committee ( CPC) Justice Theresa Mimi Shija in her welcome addressed said the legal year activities offered an opportunity for those in the bench and bar to interact and rob minds on contemporary Issues that concern the legal profession and the society generally
“ By doing so we deepen our knowledge on topics chosen for discussion and reflect and energizes for another year of service to humanity” Justice Shija said.
She stated that the theme for this year’s legal year celebration is particularly very topical as the planning committee had chosen the theme fully aware of the primary concepts to be loss of “ Professional ethics and digital era.”
