The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria in a statement issued by its National President and National Publicity Secretary has condemned in strong terms, the recent abduction of secondary school students in Dapchi, Yobe State.

The statement reads:

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria expresses her dismay and condemns totally the mass abduction of 105 (one hundred and five) girls, students of Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) Dapchi, Yobe State. The girls were abducted while exercising their constitutional right to education in furtherance of the need to ensure girl-child education for the sustainable development of our country Nigeria.

It is very disheartening for Nigerian’s to witness another mass abduction of innocent young girls, allegedly by the Boko Haram terrorist group when the security agencies are yet to rescue and recover all the students abducted from the Chibok community in April 2014.

It is regrettable to note that despite the assurances of the Federal Government and huge funds budgeted for the enhancement of security system in the country, the security agencies have still failed to protect the lives of our children.

Nigerian’s are left with the fear that the Federal Government cannot curtail the brutal attacks of the Boko Haram terrorists from our citadel of learning, sadly the target being the girl Child, who are the ‘vulnerable of vulnerables’.

We note that the recent claim of the Nigerian Military that insurgents had been completely defeated is fallacious as it gives a false sense of security to Nigerian’s when they are actually in danger. FIDA Nigeria calls for the investigation of the security agents in the community following a report published on 25th February, 2018 in Vanguard Newspaper that the military withdrew the soldiers stationed in the area few days before the attack on the school which made it possible for the terrorist group to perpetrate the act.

FIDA Nigeria commiserates with the Government and people of Yobe State and the parents of the abducted girls over the abduction of our ‘daughters’. We urge them to do all within their capacity to ensure the rescue of the abducted school girls.

FIDA Nigeria calls on the Federal government and the security agents to stand up to their responsibilities of securing the life and property of her citizens. The security agencies should intensify effort in tackling this security challenge and prevent its re occurrence.

Signed

Inime Aguma (National President FIDA Nigeria)

Princes F Frank-Chukwuani (National Publicity Secretary FIDA Nigeria)
