The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has said the report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) which claims that the Nigerian Judiciary and by implication, Nigerian judges are the 2nd highest group of bribe takers in Nigeria was not targeted at Nigerian Judges.
The Right Group stated this while formally backing down on its threat to institute legal action against the Statistician General of Nigeria following its demand for the said report to be withdrawn by the NBS
Director of CASER, Mr. Frank Tietie stated that the withdrawal of the threat was against the back drop of the clarification made by the NBS which clearly reveals that the statistics was not referring to Nigerian Judges. In his words; “CASER had had to drop the intended suit when on the 1st of September, 2017, it received a dossier from the NBS containing copious details on how the survey was conducted with its outcome.”
“CASER came to the conclusion after a painstaking perusal of the NBS raw materials that actually other persons like bailiffs who work in the judiciary are “perceived” by the a large section of the Nigerian populace to be corrupt and certainly, NOT JUDGES, especially high court judges, majority of whom have shown courage, brilliance and integrity in the discharge of their sacred duties to the Nigerian state.”
The Director noted that CASER would continue to defend Nigerian Judiciary by holding the brief of judges. “CASER shall always defend the Nigerian Judiciary by holding the brief of judges and to urge them not to be intimidated by the other arms of government that have shown that they do not give priority to the interest of the Nigerian people.”
It would be recalled that CASER had threatened to initiate legal action against the Statistician General of the Federation unless he immediately corrects the wrong impression that has been created by the report of the National Bureau of Statistics which claims that the Nigerian Judiciary and by implication, Nigerian judges are the 2nd highest group of bribe takers in Nigeria.
CASER has by this report, withdrawn the threat against NBS.
