Mr. Kayode Bello has initiated contempt proceeding against the Council of Legal Education and the Inspector General of Police over their alleged refusal to obey the court order made by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, August 9 directing the Nigerian Law School to allow Mr. Bello write his Bar final exam pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.
Kayode Bello has filed Form 48, the form for commencement of contempt proceeding against the Council of Legal education at the Federal High Court, Abuja. By the Form, the CLE is expected to purge itself of the alleged contempt or face the criminal charge of contempt for disobeying the Court order which would be initiated by the issuance of Form 49 subsequently.
Narrating the event that led to initiating the contempt proceeding, Kayode Bello noted that he was at the Abuja Campus of the Nigerian Law School and was refused entry. “I went to the campus on Friday to start my registration but I was not allowed to enter,” “The security officer said I should call the CSO. The CSO picked my call but disconnected immediately he heard my voice. I called back a number of times, but he would not pick my calls anymore.”
He further stated that he sent text messages to the secretary of Council of Legal Education and the Chief Security officer but his messages went unacknowledged.
Kayode Bello had commenced an action against the Council of Legal Education and the IG of Police following his expulsion from the Nigerian Law School few weeks before the commencement of the Bar Final for alleged conduct unbecoming of an aspiring lawyer. He subsequently obtained an exparte order directing the Law School to allow him write his exams pending the hearing of the motion on notice. The said Order was allegedly disobeyed by the Law School.
The Bar Final Exam has since commenced and would be concluded on the 19th of August 2017.
