The National Industrial Court (NIC) sitting in Lagos has directed the Staff Unions of the Lagos State Polytechnic to suspend the strike action embarked upon by the Union since August 1st, 2017 pending the hearing and determination of the Preliminary Objection filed by the Union.
While making the order, Hon. Justice Kola-Olalere directed the parties involved to explore amicable resolution of the issues before the next adjourned date in line with the provision of section 20 of the NIC Act, 2016.
The Lagos State Government had instituted the action against the agitating staff Union of the Institution to court to stop them from continuing their industrial action. The Union filed their Statement of Defence and preliminary objection on Friday 11/08/2017.
The Court ordered the Union to suspend its strike pending the hearing of the objection and urged parties to explore amicable resolution of the issues in dispute.
The matter was adjourned to September 27 for hearing.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Government had indicated that the administration of His Excellency, Governor Akinwumi Ambode, has recently increased the monthly subvention of the State tertiary institutions and ensured payment of staff salaries as at when due and is committed to entrenching stability in the institutions with the aim of ensuring that students, as well as faculty and staff, can freely pursue the transformative innovation, and research that will ensure the continued prosperity of Lagos State and the country, as a whole.
The source further noted that Lagos State Government is committed to resolving and finding a lasting solution to the issues raised by the Unions.
