The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Mr. Olumide Akpata has announced the postponement of the 2022 Annual Conference of the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) which was scheduled to commence on 22nd May, 2022 in Sokoto State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 17th May, 2022, Mr. Akpata noted that the postponement became necessary as a result of the murder of Miss Deborah Samuel, a 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto by some of her school mates for alleged blasphemy and “related developments in Sokoto.”
Mr. Akpata noted among other issues that having considered the decision of the Dr. Ubani led NBA-SPIDEL Executives, he has approved that the conference be postponed for the safety of conferees. In his words; “The Executive Committee of NBA-SPIDEL came to the painful decision to request, and I have approved, that the 2022 NBA-SPIDEL Annual Conference be postponed not only for the safety of our conferees and guests, but as a mark of respect for the memory of the slain Miss Deborah Yakubu.
