The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Benin Branch has set up a task force to enforce uniform fees payable to lawyers for various listed legal services in the State.
The uniform legal fees was published in a circular dated 5th December, 2021 and contains minimum fees to be paid by litigants for court appearances in various hierarchy of courts, solicitors consultation fees and mandatory 10% fees on legal documentations.
The circular advised both lawyers and litigants to insist on issuance and collection of receipts for legal services as the taskforce has been mandated to carryout random inspection in this regard.
Though the circular does not indicate penalty for default, it is expected that lawyers in the NBA branch would take advantage of the development to improve on their charges for legal services.
