The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has constituted a Public Interest Litigation Committee to address the growing public interest challenges in the country and restore the dignity of the legal profession.
A statement signed by the Publicity Secretary of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Rapulu Nduka quoted NBA President, Mr. Olumide Akpata as saying that recent events in the nation “reinforced the need for the NBA to activate its public interest litigation machinery.”
This would involve the NBA instituting legal action to challenge and seek judicial intervention on various issues.
Akpata added: “To that end, the NBA has now empanelled a 13-member NBA Public Interest Litigation Committee (PILC) with a mandate to, among other things, actively take steps to restore and reinforce the faith of the society in law as a veritable tool to bringing solutions to societal issues and checking abuse of power.”
The members of the NBA-PILC are: Dr. Charles Mekwunye – Chairman; Dr. Olumide Ayeni (SAN) – Co-Chairman; Chairman NBA – SPIDEL Prof. Paul Ananaba (SAN); Mr. Kunle Edun; Aderemi Oguntoye; Boonyameen Lawal; Solomon Oho; Gloria Ballason; Malachy Odo; Olumide Babalola; Baba Isah; Amaka Ezeno; Auwal Yau.
