Her Majesty The Queen of England has approved the appointment of 101 barristers and solicitors as new Queen’s Counsel (QC) in England and Wales. Among the 101 appointees is Nigeria’s Miss Akudolu Nneka Veronica Anastasia.
The title of QC is awarded to those who have demonstrated particular skill and expertise in the conduct of advocacy.
Each year, the Panel has the difficult task of identifying the truly excellent advocates. I am
confident that those appointed today fully deserve to be Queen’s Counsel.”
Among the 101 appointments are:
• 45 women applicants of the 72 who applied. Last year, 40 out of 72 female
applicants were successful;
• 15 applicants who declared an ethnic origin other than white of the 38 who applied.
Last year 14 such applicants out of 30 were appointed;
• Five solicitor advocates of the 21 who applied. In the previous competition six
solicitor advocates were appointed.
Applications for the 2021 competition closed on 31 March 2021 and the Selection
Panel submitted recommendations to the Lord Chancellor on 29 October 2021. Each
applicant has been considered against five competencies:
• Understanding and using the law
• Written and oral advocacy
• Working with others
• Diversity
• Integrity
5. 149 of the 274 applicants were interviewed by the Selection Panel. All unsuccessful
applicants receive written personal feedback on their application. The Panel expects
to invite applications for the next round of appointments in February 2022.
The Lord Chancellor will preside over the appointment ceremony at Westminster Hall on 21 March 2022, where he will formally bestow the title of QC upon the successful applicants and award the honorary QCs.
