Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, LL.B (HONS), LL.M, LLD, OON, SAN founder and Principal Partner of Livy Uzoukwu (SAN) and Co, a thriving law firm in Imo State was born August 30, 1958. He is a native of Umuhu-Okabi in Orsu Local Government Area Imo State.
He started his academic pursuit at Awo-Idemili Secondary School, Orsu LGA, Imo State from where he obtained his SSCE in 1976. He proceeded to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) for his LLB and attended the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos for his BL and was called to the Nigerian Bar in July 1982. He obtained his LLM Degree from Abia State University in 1991 and LLD from the University of South Africa in 2010. He also attended the United Nations University and. International Leadership Academy, Amman, Jordan.
Dr. Uzoukwu SAN commenced legal practice after his national youth service in July 1983 and established his own firm in March, 1988. Consequent upon his appointment as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Imo State in February 1994, he took a leave of absence from the law firm and returned to the firm in November, 1996 upon completion of his duty as a public officer. Till date, he remained the youngest person ever appointed to the office of the Attorney General of Imo State.
In September 1999, he was conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
He has exceptional experience in the practice of law at all levels of the judicial system in Nigeria up to the apex court and has acted as legal adviser to several companies, corporations and institutions.
He has also acted as counsel to State Governments and their agencies; and some Federal agencies and parastatals. He also consults on Nigerian Law for some United Kingdom solicitors.
He is member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Owerri branch, National Committee on Human Rights, Nigerian Bar Association; Contributing Editor, Orlu Year Book; co-founder and co-editor, 77k? Lawyer Journal; co-founder and co-editor, Customary Court of Appeal Law Reports, Imo State Magistrates and High Court’s Rules Committee since 1993, Nigerian Bar Association, Commonwealth Lawyers Association, International Society of Poets, Penal Reform International, National Geographical Society; International Society for Criminal Reforms; Honorary member. Association of Fellows and Legal Scholars, Centre for International Legal Studies;
He was a member of the Imo State Security Council, Imo State Judicial Service Committee and Imo State Boundary Commission. He was also a member of the Imo State Magistrate/High Court Rules Committee. He was the Chairman, Imo State Government Panel on Ikeduru Local Government Council Crisis from July –September 2005. At the Federal level, he was a member of the Body of Benchers and Council of Legal Education.
Dr Uzoukwu, SAN is an accomplished author of several legal literature. He is equally a poet who has won several prizes.
His publications includes; Grundnorm of Nigeria, GG Limited and GLP, Lagos, 1991; Remedies for Foreign Sellers of Goods, Co-author, Sweet and Maxwell, London, 1993; The Comparative Law Year Book of International Business, Kluwer, London, 1998; and several articles in newspapers and learned journals;
He is also the recipient of many awards including; First Prize, Nigerian Institute of Management Young Managers Competition, Eastern Zone, 1988; Editor’s Choice Award Winner, North American Open Poetry Contest 1993 and 1994; International Poet Merit Award Winner, International Society of Poets, Maryland, USA, 1995; Editor’s Choice Award Winner, North American Open Poetry Contest, 1996;
He has delivered several learned papers at seminars, conferences, symposia and workshops.
The Executive Governor of Imo State appointed him a member of the Imo Sate Council of Elders in 2007 in recognition of his exemplary services to the State.
On 22 December 2008, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, conferred him with the National Honour of Officer of the Order of Niger (OON) “in recognition of your outstanding virtues and in appreciation of services to our country, Nigeria”.
His hobbies includes writing poems, travelling, and football.
Dr. Livy Uzoukwu is married with Children.
