The National Judicial Council (NJC) has budgeted N1.3billion for the retirement benefits of former Chief Justices of Nigeria (CJN) this year.
Secretary of the NJC, Ahmed Gambo Saleh revealed this to the Senate Committee on Judiciary during budget defence yesterday.
He said the allocation for the retirement benefits of former CJNs was increased from N975million in 2017 to N1.3bn this year.
Daily Trust reports that the number of retired CJNs was stated in the document read by the NJC secretary.
He also said pension and gratuity of retired Federal Judicial Officers has been reduced from N5.2bn in 2017 to N4.1bn this year.
In all, he said N100bn has been budgeted for the entire judiciary this year. The breakdown of the budget shows that federal high court got N13.9bn, Supreme Court N9.3bn, Court of Appeal N13.2bn, National Industrial Court N.9.3bn, Abuja High Court N10.2bn, Sharia Court of Appeal, FCT N2.7bn, Customary court of Appeal, FCT N4bn and NJC N5.7bn.
Others are, Federal Judicial Service Commission N3bn, Judicial Service Committee, FCT N1.7bn, National Judicial Institute N3.5bn, Body of Benchers N3bn and corruption and financial crimes cases trials monitoring committee N581m.
