Poetic Side: Lawyers Do Understand – Bolaji Ramos

(In defense of Lawyers—Response To Hilary Peplar’s poem
Titled ‘They Do Not Understand’ (1878-1951))

The things that lawyers know about
Are not just property and land.
Why leaves and trees need protection
And sea’s pollution deserves solution;
Why polluters of seas and its waves must pay
And human rights must often have its way;
Why even bees need human attention
And rights of animals recognized in legislation
Why horses’ tender knees be treated with ease
And a suit in court is a way of bliss;
Why rivers should be shielded from winters
For future generation too need the glitters;
Why law may supersede one’s faith
And law can see and protect a wraith;
Why hope without law is the worst disease
And empty charity is naught but a disservice…
Lawyers do understand.
