(A dedication to FIACIJ’s Project IDENTIFY)
Identify the clog in the mug of Justice
That we may all be reminded
Of our oath as lawyers
(Speaking from the bar or not).
This hanging and cracking sword,
These dangling and breaking scales
That Themis now bears with trepidation
Should not drop under our watch.
Identify the rot in the pot of Justice
That we may all be battle-ready
To expunge the corrupt
From crumbling the Bar and the Bench.
For how can the populace on its knees
Enjoy the dividends of Equity
When the wig and the gavel
Are wreathed with beneficiaries of breaches?
Identify the threnody in the melody of Justice
That we may eventually have to dance to,
As a result of our continuing compromise.
The petty kickbacks that we give and take
The lanky lucre that we ‘ceive and make
The smallish injustices that we ignore
The sumptuous practices that we demur
Will they not, in the end, paint us
With the guilty colours of reus and rea?
Since at the marketplace of the courthouse
We have cut corners with the court clerks,
And cut corners with the court jerks
And cut corners with the court clerks
And cut corners with the court jerks,
We will eat our pounded-yam as bare yam
And our roasted chicken raw
And our vegetable soup as bare leaves
Till our attitude breeds our sudden ineptitude.
Identify the clog in the mug of Justice
Identify the rot in the pot of Justice
Identify the threnody in the melody of Justice
And act in the affirmative
That this pillar of Justice
Will not rumble and crumble upon us.
