We told you earlier that crisis may be brewing at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikorodu Branch following a directive from the General Secretary of the NBA that the Branch postponed its earlier scheduled election. Read here

Our source was reliably informed that the Chairman of the Branch, Mr. Levi Adikwaone heeded the instruction of the General Secretary to halt the election despite the fact that the steps taken by the five aggrieved members of the Branch was not in line with the procedure of first having to appeal to the Electoral Committee over their disqualification.

The source said;

“We were shocked that our Chairman Mr. Levi Adikwaone heeded to the instructions of the General Secretary and instructed the Electoral Committee to respond to the request made by the General Secretary for details of the screening exercise which they did. We also questioned whether the GS had the powers to write such a letter to the Branch halting a branch’s electoral process. Notwithstanding; the Chairman felt we should comply and we did.”

He further told us that the General Secretary also indicated that he would visit the Branch on Monday the 4th of June 2018 but did not show up and no explanation was given in that regards.

“Members of the branch  left their work and court appointment and where seated by 10.30am at the NBA Ikorodu Bar Center to welcome the General Secretary on Monday the 4th of June but he never showed up. The situation was explained to the members present as they were asked what they wanted to do now that the General Secretary did not show up neither was there a letter from him retracting his instructions not to hold branch elections.”

It was at the point that members of the branch voted overwhelmingly to proceed with their election which has now been scheduled to hold on the 8th of June 2018. The Judiciary, NGOs, the Press and other personalities are called upon to come and observe the Elections.

Meanwhile two candidates will be contesting in the election for the position of chairman of the branch; Bayo Akinlade, the National Convener of FIACIJ and Mrs. Bolatito Babasola, the current treasurer of the Branch.
