The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)’s criminal justice summit with the theme: ‘Criminal Justice in Nigeria, the journey so far’ commences today in Asaba, Delta State.
The keynote address will be delivered by Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo during the event which will hold between April 24 and 27.
Other dignitaries expected at the event include: the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, Senate President Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.
In a letter by the Chairman of the NBA Criminal Justice Committee, Arthur Obi-Okafor (SAN), the summit is aimed at “identifying amongst others the key institutional, industry and legal/regulatory factors militating against the implementation and realization of the major objectives of the reforms (in the criminal justice sector) and to find solutions to them.”
According to the organisers, the summit will have six working sessions and two break out sessions with a full complement of panel full complacent of panel of discussants drawn from Law, Customs, National institutions, Security agencies, Immigration Service, Prisons, Financial institutions, and the international community amongst others.
The event, which holds between April 21 and 26, is being organized by the NBA Criminal Justice Reform Committee chaired by Arthur Obi-Okafor (SAN).
In a statement by the Head of the Publicity sub-committee, Emeka Nwadike, also listed those expected to attend the programme include: the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
The event, which will have as its theme: ‘Criminal Justice in Nigeria, the journey so far’, will have the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu; the Executive Secretary Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, and former chairman of the Law Reform Commission, Prof. Yemi Akinseye-George.
Former NBA President Mr Joseph Daudu (SAN) will chair the first session on “unlocking the innovations of criminal Justice legislation in the country”. Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Ishaq Bello, will be the keynote speaker.
