Elegy from the Bar (For Mrs. Christy Elema)

Seven Seraphs around your mortal bed
Singing hallelujah to the most high —
How I wish I had our Father’s touch
That I might again bring you close to me.

From glory to glory the call was made
Little did I know a sister will stray —
How I wish I had our Father’s touch
That I might again bring you near to me.

I peeped into memories of our past
Days we had smiled and sisterly hugs shared—
How I wish I had our Father’s touch
That I might again draw you close to me.

Ever since I knew you from our journey to the bar
So much impact have left and created.
How I wish I had our Father’s touch
That I might again draw you near to me.

Eternal peace to your ever gentle soul,
Who would have thought this sun will fade so soon?
How I wish I had Messianic touch
To raise your Lazarus from this death-cold.

A death that will eventually kill all
Should not be too quick to pluck the good ones—
How I wish I had Messianic touch
To raise your Lazarus from this deathtrap.

Death cuts the strings in my hunting bow
How do I make sense of the remaining stick?
How I wish I had Messianic touch
To raise your Lazarus from this death-hole.

Dear sister with a lasting impression,
What tale do I tell to the Ham at Har Kwain?
How I wish I had King Midas touch
To eject you from mortality to life.

Today, my heart breaks for the breaking
For never again shall I share your smiles
The death that kills you digs deep thru my heart
And leaves me with sadness that lasts.

P.S

Your death Mrs. Elema came to me as a rude shock! Painful still is the fact that I do not know any member of your family to speak to! I wish I tried to call you after the last time we saw. I regret not taking that step to, despite the favour ma!  I wish I paid more attention to your wonderful friendship with my big sister back then in law school. Even that last time we met, I was going to tell her of that meeting but I didn’t get round to doing that too. Yet, how quickly I made that call to her when I heard of your death! Rest on Mrs. Elema, you are fondly remembered ma.  Your Law School friend Mrs. Uche is also heart broken!
