Professor Paul Beaumont of the University of Aberdeen, UK has urged members of the academia to do more by urging their respective governments to ratify the Hague conventions .
The Professor made this call during his welcome address at the ongoing 7th Journal of Private International Law Conference kicked off yesterday, 3rd August 2017 at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Professor Beaumont who is the chairman of the organizing committee of the conference and a co-editor of the journal of private international law, further updated the participants on the developments in private international law. He noted that the conference, which was a joint vision of Professor Jonathan Harris and himself started in 2005 and has been held subsequently bi-annually. Previous editions were held in Aberdeen (2005), Birmingham (2007), New York (2009), Milan (2011), Madrid (2013), Cambridge (2015) and now in Rio de Janeiro.
He noted that the global institution that binds both the academia, judges and practitioners on conflict of laws together- the Hague Conference on Private International Law- has made tremendous progress in recent years. The Conference is set to finalize a global convention on recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments (Judgments Project). The same would be due for adoption by the Diplomatic Conference in 2018. Also, the Conference is set to conclude a framework for cross-border recognition and enforcement of agreements in family disputes involving children .
He then urged members of the academia to do more by urging their respective governments to ratify these conventions.
The Conference gathers experts on conflict of laws from various academic institutions all over the world, judges and practitioners as well. About 80 presentations are expected to be delivered during the 3-day programme which is billed to end on Saturday 5th August 2017.
5 different panels were constituted on the first day of the conference with three speakers on each panel. Papers were presented on various aspects of conflict of laws such as privacy and internet, European private international law, international family law, contracts, comparative law, consumer protection, Hague Conference child protection, Brussels Ia Regulation of EU, public and private law divide and recognition of foreign judgments.
