The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria celebrated this year’s International Day of the Girl Child in their various branches. The theme of the 2017 celebration ‘THE POWER OF THE ADOLESCENT GIRL, Vision for 2030’ is specifically targeted at girls in their most vulnerable stage.
Notably FIDA Rivers State, Ekiti State and Bayelsa State had various programmes aimed at sensitizing adolescent girls on how to protect themselves from abuse and societal vices.
FIDA Rivers State Branch
The Rivers State branch of FIDA in collaboration with the Gender Vanguard CDS Group of the NYSC Rivers state chapter celebrates the International Day of the GIRL CHILD.
The programme featured resource persons who gave speeches which were inspirational and motivational.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Mina Ogbanga.
Resource persons included Stephanie Ekpebulu Esq. Who spoke on the topic ,’ The power of an adolescent child- Rights and obligations under the Child Right’s law. Ms Maureen Alikor, also a seasoned young orator, spoke on ‘ The challenges and prospects of the Adolescent Girl- Making the best use of my life’. Ogechi Okpu, a representative of the Amazing Amazons, spoke on,’ Overcoming Girl Child Prostitution and Sexual Exploitation’.
The programme was well attended by FIDANS, Youth Corp members, students, and other stakeholders.
FIDA Bayelsa State Branch
In a bid to raise public awareness on ways to win the war against violence against children especially girls, the Bayelsa State chapter of FIDA and Nigeria Police,Bayelsa State Command produced a public awareness jingle titled ‘Together’.
According to Dise Ogbise-Erhisere, Chairperson, FIDA Bayelsa who singlehanded sponsored the jingle said the production is in commemoration of the 2017 International Day of the Girl-Child celebrated every 11th October.
Ogbise-Erhisere told newsmen in her office the need for this public awareness jingle which is to help survivors of violence know what to do and report cases promptly to relevant authorities.
The public awareness jingle featured the Commissioner of Police, Amba Asuquo and Chairperson of FIDA Bayelsa, Dise Ogbise-Erhisere.
It is a 1-minute jingle that encourages neighbours and parents to report Violent cases against children.
FIDA Ekiti State Branch
For Ekiti State FIDA, the theme for this year … ‘The Power of Adolescence, Vision 2030,’ sets the tone for a higher call on all stakeholders to raise awareness on issues facing the girl child. Education, nutrition, security, child marriage, legal and medical rights, harmful customary
Deaths of adolescent girls resulting from gender based violence is the trend in recent times, psychological trauma, sexual and physical abuse, child marriage, exploitation and trafficking etc have become the norms. So many girls are out of school, leading to a sure compromise of their future to financial and economic independence as adults.
Let us all empower the girl beside us, raise our voices to fight for their rights and protection. This is our collective responsibility to build a peaceful and secured society.
By changing the present, we are preparing for the future….2030 is just around the corner..
