Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has charged legal practitioners in Nigeria to be agent of positive change in the country by freeing the nation from the shackles of corruption and ensuring quick dispensation of justice.

Ortom gave the charge yesterday when he received in his office a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, led by its second Vice President, Mr Monday Ubani, who represented the President of the Association, Mr Mahmoud Abubakar Balarabe in Makurdi.

He noted that by the virtue of their profession, lawyers, according to the governor had the solution to Nigeria’s problems ‘because they prosecute, defend and judge people.’

The governor promised that his administration would partner with the association in ensuring that justice reign in the state notwithstanding that people like him who champion justice have become objects of attacks from the opposition.

According to him, ‘let me commend the NBA for visiting the state to assess the havoc done by flood which affected 21 out of the 23 local government areas in the state. The people of the state were happy with the response of Nigerians and the international community to their plight’.

Ortom assured his visitors that items donated by individuals and organizations to the displaced persons would be equitably distributed by a committee headed by the Deputy Governor.

He also expressed appreciation to the media for the wide publicity given to the disaster which has brought help from far and near.

Speaking earlier, NBA President, Mr Balarabe told the Governor that they were in the state  to assess the effect of flood and to donate relief materials.

He sympathized with the government and people of the state over the disaster and appreciated the Governor for ensuring a cordial relationship between the bar and his administration through the efforts of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Michael Gusa.
