“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”. Psalm 90:12.
The referred scripture emphasizes the essence of age and keeping track of same. I would not assume the status of a theologian to offer an interpretation of that scripture but my carnal mind however would prefer to attempt to adapt the above bible quote to mean that my inability to reflect on how far I have come and how much time I have left would be “stupid” of me.
I am not a preacher and I know that lawyers’ forum would be the very wrong place to start sermon but little of “preaching” would not harm. So join me as we analyze with scriptural understanding the reason why wisdom has taken flight and become a scarce commodity in our circle. For fear of making sweeping comment, let me here, acknowledge and confirm that the legal profession remains the greatest repose of wisdom. Men who can compete with King Solomon and give him a run are here!
I can count dozens of situations where lawyers especially in this part of the world chase shadows and dwell so much in irrelevances while ignoring the crux of our existence. It is said that the law is the last result of human wisdom acting upon human experience for the benefit of the public. This is a profession where people should be able to understand and read the minds of others and not the other way round. Ours is a profession where wisdom should be flaunted by all and sundry. In the legal profession there should be nothing like manipulation. Who manipulates lawyers? Lawyers are learned and are imbued with the ability to distinguish frivolities and unnecessary distractions. Lawyers are intelligent enough to critically analyze actions intended to deceive or distract them.
However, with all that go on around me, I am wondering if I should just add to my preaching this morning some exorcism! That too would not harm!
Back to my preaching, age relates to so many things. It serves as a milestone for a lot of achievements. The most common being birth. Couples note the date they got married to number their matrimonial days, companies note their dates of incorporation to mark anniversaries, even Mark Zuckerberg has enabled Facebook community the opportunity to marks the days they became friend on Facebook, so we have “Friendversary.”
As Lawyers, our legal career starts the moment we are finally found fit and proper to be admitted into the “noblest” profession by the Body of Benchers. After this call, we are enjoined to number our call days so that we would be wise as lawyers (Psalm 90:12). Unfortunately for us as Lawyers, the modality for counting the number of days after the call has been an unsettled issue. I am not sure who is the authority in resolving this issue. I only wish to note that it may just be the very foundation of the numerous challenges we have as professionals. Speaking spiritually!
“So teach us to number our days oh Lord, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”. Psalm 90:12.
Amen?
