Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole, has been dragged before an Ogun State High Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, by a law firm MJS Partners, for his failure to pay for the cost of legal services incurred during his trial with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The firm in suit No. AB/153/2013 filed before the court accused Bankole of unwillingness to pay the legal fee put at N70 million and which was later reduced to N6 million based on an agreement reached between the firm and him.
Counsel to the MSJ Partners, Dr Yemi Oke, while appearing before Justice M.A Dipeolu, on Monday, told the court that the case had been filed since 2013 claiming that the firm amended its writ of summons and reduced the fee to N6m.
Oke said the defendant since that period had failed to obey the court order following different rulings by the court and that he had since approached an appellate court in Ibadan that the matter must be heard in his merit.
Counsel to MSJ Partners, Oke, told the court that the firm was approached by Bankole when he was arrested by the anti-graft agency in 2011and that the sum of N70m was agreed as legal charges.
He said the team secured his release from the EFCC custody but only a sum of N3m was paid to the firm for transportation and hotel accommodation.
However, Counsel to Bankole, Abiodun Aboaba, prayed the court for an adjournment so as to study the case and file so as to enable him file necessary responses to all the allegations by the plaintiff legal team.
Ruling, Justice Dipeolu said the court may not be ready to entertain any delay from the defence counsel.
The judge thereafter adjourned to October 17 for the defence team to file its responses.
