It is time to cleanse our unhealthy habits and begin to build sustainable healthy lifestyle changes.

When we talk of healthy lifestyle what comes to mind is physical fitness and healthy diet, we immediately imagine lifting weights, running on the treadmill, cutting down on carbs and doing keto diet. Though these images are certainly connected, there’s another form of fitness we should be practicing in our daily lives: mental fitness. True fitness is incomplete without sound mental health. It is as important to exercise our brain regularly just like we do physical workout. A key result of such activities is the increase in the plasticity of brain which means the ability of the brain to continue to develop and undergo required changes all throughout its lifespan. It is due to this process that individuals can grow and develop their mental capabilities all throughout their lives.

What is Mental Fitness?

Mental fitness is having a healthy and strong mind to allow us handle the challenges and opportunities that life puts in front of us, without getting too worn out. Being Mentally Fit helps us improve concentration and focus, and handle stress more effectively. Mental fitness is as important to the body as physical fitness to ensure our minds are in tip-top shape and our attitudes are flowing in the right direction.

Mental fitness has little to do with intelligence or IQ tests and a lot more to do with positive thinking and affirmations. The benefits that can come from daily mental fitness exercises are nearly endless, from better sleep to lower anxiety to higher self-confidence. When you’re not mentally fit, it can be difficult to perform complex tasks excellently. Practicing mental fitness daily will help you achieve and maintain a mentally healthy state.

Follow the tips below and start on the path toward a healthier mental state, happier you.

Be positive with yourself: Positive affirmation is one avenue to increased mental proficiency. Start with being aware of your thoughts. Refocus any negative thoughts or attitudes toward optimism. Make a list of your good qualities and remind yourself that you don’t have to be perfect. Set goals for what you should improve on and start small to avoid becoming overwhelmed.

Treat yourself well: Have a me time. Be selfish. Do something you enjoy doing. Whether your favorite activity is window shopping, visiting the spa, playing game or reading a book, make time to engage in something that makes you happy.

Set Goals: Setting goals and reaching them will build confidence and provide a sense of satisfaction. Start off small by making it a goal to call a friend each day or take a daily walk.

Exercise: Regular physical activity improves both your mental and physical well-being and reduces depression and anxiety. Join the gym, go for a daily run or get involved in sports.

Stop Multitasking: Most of us are chronic multitaskers and we don’t even know it! We’re obsessed with productivity to the point that we’re overdoing it and running ourselves down both mentally and We may think multi-tasking enables us get more things done at a time, but it creates more problems than it solves.  So, whether at work or at home, start practicing doing one thing at a time and find yourself easing into a more peaceful and more productive state. Focusing on one task at a time will improve your concentration and help you to be more productive. Be in the present. When you are taking a walk or spending time with friends, make the most of it. Turn off your cell phone and don’t make mental to-do lists.

Visualize (Daydream): Take a break from your worries and concerns. Close your eyes, imagine yourself in a dream location, and then relax and focus on the positive feelings your dream invokes. The brain doesn’t know the difference between reality and fantasy, so you can close your eyes anytime and transport yourself to your dream life and surroundings. Visualize your goals and reap all the wonderful feelings that come with it. By doing so, you’ll be more motivated to take steps to achieve those goals.

Meditate: As wonderful and exhilarating as visualization can be, it’s also very powerful and beneficial to meditate regularly. Allow all your thoughts to fall away and focus only on your breathing for a period of up to 30 minutes. Experts have said that meditation not only reduces stress but thickens grey matter in the brain, leading to heightened working memory and improved critical decision-making skills.

Read: Remember way back when you used to love curling up with a good book? Well, reading is an important part of your mental fitness. Diving into a book or a magazine is a fun activity that keeps you learning new things while also relaxing you.

Think about your emotional well-being. Consider the particular stress you are facing and how its draining you mentally. Allow yourself some break from your worries and concerns by recognizing that dedicating a short time every day to your mental fitness will yield significant benefits in terms of feeling rejuvenated and personal confidence.
