The word inner peace is nice to think about. It bring  feelings of calmness, relaxation, and happiness. It is hard to imagine a person on this planet that doesn’t want to enjoy the feeling of true inner peace.  Let’s imagine how great it would be to stay calm, focused, and undisturbed by circumstances and people! Wouldn’t it be great if everyone got along and we were finally able to achieve world peace? But that’s probably a mission impossible. With all the things going on in the world and in our own lives, it’s nearly impossible to find peace and tranquility.

In addition to all the  happenings around us, our mind is never at rest. Thoughts about the ‘economy palaver’, constant crazy traffic on the road, security, fluctuating emotions, the list is just endless. We are constantly thinking about one thing or the other consciously or unconsciously. Everything just seems to be more and more out of our control. But in the midst of all these, rather than get anxious and fearful, rather than negative thoughts and worst expectations, rather than being tensed, unsatisfied and unhappy, we can choose to stay emotionally and mentally poised and unshaken.

What is Inner Peace?

Inner peace refers to a state of being mentally or spiritually at peace, with enough knowledge and understanding to keep oneself strong in the face of discord or stress. Being “at peace” is healthy and the opposite of being stressed or anxious. It is the ability to remain calm and in control of oneself and mind, even during problems and difficult situations. Inner Peace or peace of mind is the actual antidote for stress and anxiety.

As important and beneficial as inner peace is, it is only experienced by very few. As the principal of your law firm with juniors who act like they left their brains at home, as juniors who constantly have crazy deadlines, as law office manager who have this nagging and unbearable client, ready to drive you crazy but not willing to pay, how about the home front? Husband, wife, children, responsibility, the list is just endless. To determine whether you have peace of mind lets answer the questions below:

(a)How many times have you been overwhelmed by emotions, lost your temper, and got angry or impatient?

(b)How many times have you regretted your reactions or attitude?

(c)Do you shout at your children, spouse, co-workers or employees? Do you get angry with them?

(d)Do you let your work, the weather, noises, other people’s behavior and attitude, movies, TV, or the newspapers influence your mood?

(e)Do outside events distract your mind and make you think about them, instead of what you choose to think about?

You must have identified with one or two of the above. The lack of inner peace causes emotional breakdowns, indecisions, unnecessary waste of productive time on irrelevant thoughts.

Peace of mind leads to better emotional and physical health, increased energy, stronger mental powers, improved memory, and a better ability to learn and explore. The calmness of mind from daily practice of inner peace will affect your inner being, body and inter personal relationship.

Much as attaining inner peace is a tall order, it is not impossible and can be achieved. These few things would help you have inner peace as often as possible especially in chaotic situations

Don’t Fight Reality: Certain things in life are just not going to change. Rather than battle with them in your mind, accept that they will be what they are and move on.

Step out: Nature is peaceful and naturally gives tranquility. Spend time in relaxing outdoor place as often as possible. Seek out a beautiful setting that is removed from manmade noise like traffic and cell phones. Large city parks or even campgrounds outside of town are good places to look for your own little piece of serenity.

Smile More. As simple as it sounds, sharing a smile with others is a great way to find peace within. When you connect more with those around you, the world seems like a better place to live. Next time you are at the grocery store, try smiling at people as they pass by. Simple steps such as this go a long way towards inner peace when they become part of your daily routine.

Live for each day. If you are always looking off in the distance for what is to come, you will never truly be at peace. Whatever you are doing, try your best to be mentally present and give it all your attention. The future is uncertain, and therefore can be scary and unsettling. Push future plans out of your mind in favor of a ‘here-and-now’ mindset. You will be amazed at the sense of peace that can come from just living each moment for what it is.

 Focus on Others. A powerful way to gain inner peace is to give of your time and efforts to a cause outside of yourself. Knowing you are working for a cause that helps others who are less fortunate is a great feeling. When you go home at night you will feel pride, accomplishment, and inner peace knowing the world is slightly better because of your service.

Meditate. This last point can be the easiest, and the most successful, way to find inner peace. To feel at peace, you need to look inside and find what really makes you happy. During the constant noise and distraction that is daily life, there is no time to think quietly about what you want to get out of your days. Making a habit of regular meditation will give you a chance to access your true thoughts, and lead you to a greater sense of inner peace.

Inner Peace guarantees:

Freedom from stress, anxieties and worries;

A sense of inner happiness and bliss;

Better concentration ability.

A sense of inner strength and power;

Efficiency;

More patience, tolerance and tact;

Better and sound sleep.

The truth is that peace of mind can be attained and enjoyed, even while leading a normal, ordinary life, with a job and family. Romans 14 vs 19, let us make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
