Under the proposed Legal Profession Regulation Act, the roll of legal practitioners shall no longer be kept at the Supreme Court. The Legal Profession Regulation Council of Nigeria established under the proposed Act shall keep and maintain the roll of members of the legal profession.
The Council shall from the commencement of this Bill keep a list of all members of practitioners called to the Nigerian Bar, which shall be referred to as “the Roll”. The Roll may be kept either by means of computer or by recording in books for that purpose or both. The Council shall make entries in the Roll available for inspection during office hours, without payment, by any person who applies to inspect it.
On production of a certificate of Call to Bar issued by the Council or court order for the restoration of the name of a person whose name has been struck of the roll, the Council shall enter the name of that person on the roll.
The Council shall appoint a person who shall be known as Registrar of the Roll to perform the function of recording the data of legal practitioners in line with the Rules of Content of the Roll Register to be developed by the Council.
