The Chief Judge of Enugu state Justice Priscilla Emeghelu, has called on the citizens of the state who are not tax compliant as a result of over assessment of double taxation to approach the state revenue court for compensation.

Justice Emeghelu made this known during the inauguration of the Enugu state revenue court said, the era of jungle justice and forceful seizure of properties has come to end as the court will hear and determine tax and revenue cases throughout the state.

“This is an opportunity for any dissatisfied citizen to take advantage of the court and seek compensation. Refusal to pay tax is a strict liability offence under the personal income tax act cap. P.8 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and Finance Amended Law 2011 Laws of Enugu state Nigeria.

However, there may be a reason for neglect or refusal to any citizen to pay his or her tax such as over assessment or double taxation, whatever be the reason, let tax authorities and citizens feel free to approach this revenue court to seek compensation”

Justice Emeghelu said the practice of the court will conform with the practice of magistrates court in the state, enjoining the court to apply accelerated hearing in cases that are brought before them.
