A Chief Magistrate Court in Benin has remanded one Ufor Papa Samuel (38) and Gift Lawrence (F) 26 in prison custody over alleged human trafficking.
The suspects were arraigned on a two-count charge of human trafficking punishable under sections 13(4) d and 14(5) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, respectively.
The Benin Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffick in Person (NAPTIP), Nduka Nwanwenne, said this in a statement made available to journalists in Benin.
According to him, Ufor Papa Samuel, had earlier been granted administrative bail for allegedly trafficking two girls to Mali before being rearrested for recruiting another girl for trafficking again.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty while their counsel, J.O. Oderi and S.A. Osifo, respectively, urged the court to grant them bail.
The presiding Chief Magistrate C.E. Oghuma remanded the accused persons in prison and adjourned the case to September 15 for hearing.
Responding, NATIP’s Director General, Julie Okah-Donli, advised traffickers to seek legitimate means of livelihood in their own interest, as the agency was poised to rid the country of traffickers.
